Mental Illness

Good mental health will benefit anyone.
A number of unpleasant things can get in the way.
These include

  • too much negative stress
  • poor health
  • not eating right
  • addictions
  • bad habits
  • toxic relationships
Hypnotherapy is a great way to help you deal problems such as these. With Hypnotherapy, you may even be able to conquer them.

Some of us also live with mental illness.
This can make other problems worse.
In some cases, catastrophic.
Hypnotherapy can help you manage mental illness, as well as the unpleasant things listed above.

Treatment

Treating any mental illness can be a complicated matter. Some rely solely on medications.
Many of these lead successful and productive lives.
Others experience problems, including side effects, incorrect diagnosis and prescription.

Some others manage to get by without medication.
This life can be very tough, for the person,
and especially for their family and friends.
Difficulties tend to increase, in proportion to the seriousness of the mental illness.

An increasing number of people use multiple treatments. Some who take medication also use talking therapies. This approach tends to show better results than either medication or therapies alone.

Can Mental Illness Be Cured ?

The general answer is NO. I strongly believe it is wrong to hold out false hope.
Anything anyone says in this area can and will be contested. However and in my experience, mental illness needs to be managed.

Especially with serious mental illness, true cures are rare. Such cases as claimed can usually be explained by other factors, such as remission, incorrect reading of symptoms/behaviour, or just plain false hope.

In many cases, mental illness can be managed.
Hypnotherapy is an excellent technique for this, especially when used in conjunction with existing treatments.

How I work with Mental Illness

It is unusual for a person to have only a mental illness.
Poor life choices and bad habits are much more prevalent amongst the mentally ill.
Smoking rates, for instance, are much higher.
Not eating right is chronic.
Addictions have a particularly strong grip.

Hypnotherapy can help you manage these destructive behaviours, so that you can better deal with the mental illness. You can also learn and develop strategies to deal with the symptoms.

Diagnosis ?

I will work with people who have a diagnosis,
or who are pre-diagnosis, or have none.

I can also work with you
if you feel your diagnosis is incorrect.
Or you have had multiple diagnosises,
and do not know which are correct.

Important : I cannot diagnose you. That is strictly a job for your psychiatrist. I will never advise you to stop taking your medication, nor will I endorse or encourage you to do so.
That, as well, is strictly a job for your psychiatrist.

If you come to me with a diagnosis,
I will help you find strategies to deal with the way it impacts on your life.

You will be in charge of guiding your treatment,
and you can select what we focus on.

My treatment is person-centred,
and focuses more on who you are,
and less on what labels are attached to you,
such as 'bipolar' or 'depressive'.
I use and advocate a 'strengths-based' approach.
That is, I help you use your strengths to work on problems and issues.

People with the same mental illness experience it in many different ways.
I will treat you as an individual, who happens to live with a mental illness.
