Probably one of the most difficult ones not in terms of the treatment but the effect it had on me was a young woman of 18 who came from a middle European family who was depressed and suicidal and I got her to disobey her parents and go out and leave the house which was against their wishes and do something for herself.
And on the Friday I said to her I want you to go and join a club, I don’t care what you do but do it for you and let your other siblings look after your parents if they need to.
I said I want you to ring me on Monday and let me know how you go.
Sorry, this was earlier than Friday it was the Wednesday.
And on the Friday she rang me and said Mr Perry I’ve done what you said I’m going to Melbourne to do some skydiving.
Now here’s a suicidal person doing some skydiving.
That was the worst weekend of my life.
I couldn’t sleep and when she rang on the Monday it was such a relief because she said Mr Perry I’ve found out that I’m not going to commit suicide, they had to force my things off me in the plane to make the first jump.
So that one stands out but I used to do a lot of work with depressives and I’ve never ever lost a patient to suicide in all the depressive patients.
When I went into this, I might tell you, hypnotherapists wouldn’t touch depressives at all.
But we developed ways of dealing with it and they obviously worked because we’ve never had a problem.
It’s a hard question, they do stand out.
Chris :
I probably see more patients now for anxiety than anything else and there’s some discussion over here as to whether or not anxiety is an illness.
Do you consider anxiety to be an illness?
Bryan :
Anxiety is an illness of the ego not of the body.
Chris :
Well that’s and interesting comment.
And what do you mean?
Bryan :
Well anxiety is you to the panic that exists between what you think you should be doing or achieving and what you have achieved or should be achieving and if there’s a wide enough gap you’ll get anxious about practically everything you do.
And anxiety is at the opposite end of the same spectrum as depression they’re both all due to repressed information which is causing either the depression on one hand or the anxiety on the other.
Chris :
Yes I believe as well there is mild anxiety and that can creep up to clinical depression at the end of it.
It is on the same spectrum.
Bryan :
It is a spectrum.
It’s not black and white.
And sometimes if you don’t get to the cause properly you’ll release the depression or the depressive thoughts and the anxiety will take over and if you have that same sea saw effect you’ve got a bipolar situation.
